Fill in the parts you have, and the generator assembles a tidy description: summary first, then key points, chapters, links, a call to action and hashtags. It also checks your chapters against YouTube’s rules.
How to use the description generator
- Summary: one or two sentences that say what the video gives the viewer. This is the part people see before clicking “more”.
- Key points: one per line. They become a short list.
- Chapters: one per line, starting with the time, for example “1:15 Mixing the dough”.
- Links: “Label | address”, one per line.
- Click Build my description, check the counter, then copy the text into YouTube Studio.
Chapter rules
Chapters split your video into sections with their own titles in the progress bar. According to YouTube Help, they only appear if:
- the first timestamp is 0:00;
- there are at least three timestamps, in ascending order;
- each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds.
The generator flags any line that breaks these rules before you paste it.

Description length
YouTube Help sets the limit at 5,000 characters. The YouTube Data API documentation measures it in bytes instead, which means accented letters and emoji take more room than plain letters. The counter shows both when they differ.
What to put in a description
- The answer first. YouTube Help says the description matters more than tags for discovery. Describe the video in plain words, with the terms people search for.
- Chapters on any video longer than a few minutes: viewers jump to the part they need.
- Links that help: sources, tools you used, related videos. If a link earns you money, say so.
- A few hashtags at most, and only relevant ones.
