Type your topic, add a few related keywords, and get a clean list of tags you can paste into YouTube Studio. The counter applies YouTube’s own rule for the 500 characters limit, so you never get an error on upload.
How to use the tag generator
- Main topic: the words someone would type to find your video, such as “sourdough bread”.
- Related keywords: two to five other angles of the same video, separated by commas.
- Misspellings: optional, but useful if your topic is often typed wrong.
- Untick the tags that do not describe your video, then click Copy selected tags and paste them into the Tags field of your video in YouTube Studio.
Do YouTube tags still matter?
Less than most people think. YouTube Help says tags play a minimal role in how videos are discovered, and that they are mostly useful when your topic is commonly misspelled. The title, the thumbnail and the description matter more.
So treat tags as a quick final step, not as a ranking trick. A handful of accurate tags, including the usual misspellings of your topic, is enough. Spend the time you save on a clearer title and a better description.
The 500-character rule, explained
The Tags field accepts 500 characters in total. According to the YouTube Data API documentation, two details count toward that limit:
- the commas between tags;
- two invisible quotation marks around any tag that contains a space. “sourdough bread” costs 17 characters, not 15.
That is why a list can be refused even when the letters alone add up to fewer than 500. The counter above follows these rules.

Good tags in practice
- Describe this video, not your whole channel. Tags about unrelated topics mislead viewers and go against YouTube’s rules on misleading metadata.
- Put the most precise tag first. Then broaden: “sourdough starter”, then “sourdough”, then “bread baking”.
- Skip tags that repeat your title word for word if you are short on space.
- Do not copy another creator’s name into your tags to borrow their audience.
FAQ
How many tags should a YouTube video have?
YouTube sets no number, only the 500 characters total. Five to fifteen accurate tags usually cover a video.
Are tags the same as hashtags?
No. Tags are hidden and go in the Tags field. Hashtags start with # and appear in the title or description, where viewers can click them.
Does this tool use YouTube data or AI?
No. It combines your words with common search patterns, entirely in your browser.
