How to Start a YouTube Channel: Step by Step

Updated October 11, 2026 · Official specs checked against YouTube Help on October 11, 2026

Creating a channel takes a few minutes. Setting it up so viewers understand what you offer takes a little longer. Here is the whole path, from the first click to your first upload.

1. Choose the type of channel

YouTube offers two options:

  • A personal channel, tied to your Google Account. Only you manage it.
  • A channel with a Brand Account, which can have several managers or owners. Useful for a business, a duo or if you plan to hire help later.

2. Create the channel

On a computer, YouTube Help gives these steps for a personal channel:

  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
  3. In Account, select Add or manage channel(s).
  4. Click Create a channel.
  5. Choose a profile picture, type your name and your handle.
  6. Click Create channel.

For a Brand Account, open your channel list and click Create a new channel, then choose a picture, a name and a handle.

3. Pick a name and a handle

The name is what viewers read; the handle is your unique @address. A handle is 3 to 30 characters long and must be available. Stuck? The channel name generator suggests names with their handle.

4. Verify your account

Verification with a phone number unlocks features you will want early. According to YouTube Help, a verified account can upload videos longer than 15 minutes, add custom thumbnails, go live and appeal copyright claims.

5. Set up your channel’s look

  • Profile picture: shown at 98 × 98 pixels in a circle. Preview yours.
  • Banner: 2560 × 1440 pixels recommended, text inside the safe area. Check yours.
  • Description: one or two sentences on what you publish and for whom.

All of this lives in YouTube Studio, under Customization.

6. Plan your first videos

Before filming, write down three to five video ideas on the same theme. A new viewer who likes one video should find others like it. The video ideas generator gives you starting points by format.

Keep the first videos simple. Good sound matters more than an expensive camera, and a clear promise in the title matters more than effects.

7. Upload and polish

8. Know the road to monetization

Ad revenue starts with the YouTube Partner Program: today 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days, with higher thresholds announced for new applicants from February 1, 2027. Details in YouTube monetization requirements.
