Crop or fit?

  • Fill the frame scales the image until it covers the whole output and crops what sticks out. Best for photos, when losing a little at the edges is fine.
  • Fit inside keeps the whole image and fills the empty space with the color you choose. Best for logos, screenshots or slides that must not be cut.

JPG or PNG?

JPG files are much lighter, which matters for thumbnails: YouTube accepts up to 2 MB from the phone app. Use PNG only for flat graphics with sharp text, and check the weight shown after resizing. The tool warns you when a thumbnail is heavier than the phone limit.

Avoid blurry results

Resizing cannot add detail. If your image is smaller than the size you pick, it will be enlarged and look soft. Start from the largest version of the picture you have, and check the result with the thumbnail checker.

FAQ

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The resizing happens in your browser with a canvas element, and the download comes straight from your device’s memory.

Which size should I choose for a thumbnail?

3840 × 2160 pixels is what YouTube recommends. Choose 1920 × 1080 if you upload from your phone and need a lighter file.
